We reckon the 200 ft diameter "skid
pad" (so called) as used by racers
in America is a very usefull aid in suspension tuning, for baselining
the car. It is not needed for a highly adjustable open wheeler, or
professional racing, where balance should be achieved quickly at the
beginning of a track testing session.Road & Track
Magazine have been using skid pad tests since the early 1970's to determine the maximum g
cornering force of the cars they road test. They
might now use a g force trace such as you get with good data acquisition. A
g force meter would not be good enough, because it might record an unreal jerk reading,
rather than smooth steady state.
Now let's check what the literature says about skid pad testing.
Paul Van Valkenburgh, an Engineer with experience going way back
at Chevrolet Research & Development, and current contributor to Race Car Engineering
Magazine - "Skid pad tests can be the most productive tests
for a road racing car.... A lot of data can be obtained at a low cost and low risk
on a skid pad." "Tire tests are one of the most valuable uses for a skid
pad, once the chassis has been fairly well developed. There is no other way to
accurately determine compounds, temperatures, camber angles or pressures"
Don Alexander, author of "Performance Handling".
"Skid pad testing plays an important part in development work. It isolates
parameters and allows you to quickly reach baseline settings for steady state situations.
Camber, tire pressure, tire loading characteristics, total traction and front and
rear handling balance are quickly determined on the skid pad."
"Most racers never consider testing on a skid pad. It's not very exciting.
Even fewer street set ups are skid pad tested. But more can be learned about
car set up in a day or two than a whole season of racing."
Steve Smith, speedway Author and Publisher, strongly supports
skid pad testing and descibes in detail real world tests in his books.
It beats me why we are not using skid pads in Australia.
After market spring manufacturers should be using them to develop their products.
For race car teams, a skid pad at the race circuit complex would be of great value in
getting to a ball park set up faster, and learning about the operating range of the tyres. |
